Holding Back
I put out a video recently, The Future of This Channel, where I voiced some of my thoughts and feelings about the work I do, and what I want to achieve from it.
If you’ve not seen it, I’d love you to watch. It was my way of creating a kind of verbal contract with the viewer.
I always want to offer something of value in exchange for your valuable attention.
But with a million things to do at any one time, I frequently find myself overwhelmed, second guessing every move, and blocked.
I’m sure many others feel the same, especially when presenting creative work to the world.
It’s scary. It’s not easy to show the world your innermost thoughts and feelings. Or open yourself up to the world’s critique.
It can make us feel vulnerable and exposed. It’s far easier to hide away and keep our creations close to our chest, waiting for the exact right moment to share them.
But there’s never a perfect moment for the big reveal.
Making work publicly available allows us to reflect on feedback, to grow as artists, to learn, to gain confidence, and find others like us.
Sometimes you just need to take the plunge, break the blockage, and most of all, don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
So, for whoever needs to hear this today, what have you been holding back?
Time to let the world see.
